Assisi & Umbria

Assisi is the hill town where St. Francis and St. Clare lived, prayed and are buried, and where St. Carlo Acutis now rests. From here the green hills of Umbria lead to Cascia, home of St. Rita, and to Orvieto, keeper of the Eucharistic Miracle of Bolsena.

Getting around

Local travel

  • Assisi's train station is in Santa Maria degli Angeli, about 3 km below the old town. Local buses leave from the station square about every 30 minutes and take 10 to 20 minutes to reach the upper town.
  • Direct trains from Rome Termini take about 2 hours. Trains that change at Foligno take longer.
  • The nearest airport is Perugia (PEG), about 20 minutes away by the airport bus. Most U.S. travelers arrive through Rome, a little over 2 hours by car.
  • Cars are restricted in the historic center. Park outside the walls; the Piazza Giovanni Paolo II car park is about 400 m from the Basilica of St. Francis.
  • The old town sits on a steep hillside with stone streets and stairs. Wear good shoes and allow extra time between St. Francis and St. Clare, at opposite ends of town.
