The Story
O Cebreiro is a mountain hamlet in Galicia, Spain, standing at more than 1,200 meters on the French Way of the Camino de Santiago. Its church of Santa María la Real, traditionally dated to the ninth century, is among the oldest churches on the pilgrim road, and it is the home of a Eucharistic tradition dated to around the year 1300. According to the traditional account, on a winter day of fierce snow, a farmer named Juan Santín climbed from the village of Barxamaior to attend Mass. The Benedictine monk celebrating that day inwardly scorned the peasant's effort, doubting that the Eucharist was anything more than bread and wine. At the consecration, the account relates, the Host took on the appearance of flesh and the wine in the chalice the appearance of blood, staining the altar linens — and the priest's faith was restored. The earliest surviving documentary reference to the miracle is a letter of Pope Innocent VIII from 1487, and a bull of Alexander VI in 1496 also refers to the event. In 1486 King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella visited O Cebreiro on their pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, and Spanish tradition credits the Catholic Monarchs with donating the reliquary in which the relics — the chalice, the paten and the remains associated with the miracle — are still kept. The relics are displayed in a chapel of Santa María la Real beside a venerated statue of the Virgin, the Virxe do Milagre, which tradition says inclined toward the altar at the moment of the miracle. Solemn processions with the relics are held each year, notably on Corpus Christi, August 15 and September 8. For the many thousands who walk the Camino, O Cebreiro is a place where the way of pilgrimage and the mystery of the Eucharist meet; the medieval chalice of the miracle has become a symbol of Galicia itself, and pilgrims still pause at the little mountain church to adore the Lord whom tradition says revealed himself there to a doubting priest and a faithful farmer.
