The Story

Morrovalle, a hill town in Italy's Marche region, preserves the memory of a Eucharistic event of 1560 that earned it the title Civitas Eucaristica — Eucharistic City. According to the historical account, on the night of April 16–17, 1560, a fire destroyed the church of the Franciscan friary in Morrovalle. Days later, on April 27, as the friars cleared the ruins of the high altar, Father Battista da Ascoli discovered among the debris a pyx whose lid had been burned away — yet the consecrated Host within was reportedly found intact, though everything around it had been consumed. The Blessed Sacrament was exposed for the veneration of the townspeople, and word of the event spread quickly. Pope Pius IV sent a bishop to investigate the reported prodigy, and upon receiving his account the pope judged the preservation of the Host to be without natural explanation, authorizing public devotion by papal bull in 1560. The town has honored the memory of the miracle ever since; its fourth centenary was solemnly celebrated in 1960, when the city placed the inscription Civitas Eucaristica at its main gate, and the event is still commemorated in Morrovalle's churches today. Like the similar traditions of Faverney and Meerssen, Morrovalle speaks of God's care for the Blessed Sacrament and calls the faithful to reverence Christ's abiding presence in the Eucharist.

Church Recognition

Recognized in its own century: after an investigation ordered by Pope Pius IV, public devotion was authorized by papal bull in 1560, and Morrovalle has borne the title Civitas Eucaristica in memory of the event.

Catholic Teaching

The tradition of the unburned Host points to Christ's enduring presence in the consecrated species (CCC 1377) and to the reverent care the Church gives the Blessed Sacrament.

Plan the trip

How Long Should I Stay? Half Day is a good target for a prayerful visit.

Half Day is a practical amount of time for Eucharistic Miracle of Morrovalle. Allow 2-4 hours for the church, miracle site, and Mass.

  • Minimum: Half Day for the principal shrine or church and personal prayer.
  • Recommended: Half Day so you can include Mass, the main devotional focus, and time to explore without rushing.
  • Extended stay: Add a second day for a slower pace and nearby sacred sites.

Pilgrim Tip: Leave at least one unscheduled block for quiet prayer; pilgrimage sites often become most meaningful after the checklist is finished.

Best Time to Visit Apr-Jun & Sep-Oct usually offers the best overall balance.

Best Overall

Apr-Jun & Sep-Oct

Comfortable weather and fewer peak-season crowds.

Peak Periods

Major feast days, school holidays, summer weekends, and organized diocesan pilgrimages can bring larger crowds. Book lodging and transportation earlier if your dates overlap a major celebration.

For a Quieter Pilgrimage

Choose a weekday outside the busiest holiday period and arrive early in the day.

Pilgrim Tip: Always check the shrine calendar before booking; the most spiritually rich dates are often also the busiest.

Getting There From the United States For most U.S. pilgrims, Ancona (AOI) is the most practical gateway.

Best Gateway: Ancona (AOI)

For most pilgrims traveling from the United States, Ancona (AOI) is the most practical arrival point. Continue by road.

From the airport, continue toward Morrovalle by the most practical combination of rail, bus, rental car, taxi, or pre-arranged transfer. For remote shrines, a private transfer or rental car is often simpler than piecing together local connections.

Typical U.S. Routing

United States -> Ancona (AOI) -> Morrovalle -> Eucharistic Miracle of Morrovalle

Our recommendation: Compare total travel time, not airfare alone. A slightly more expensive flight that removes a long ground transfer can make a pilgrimage much easier.

On the ground

Getting Around Plan around walking first, then use local transit or a transfer when needed.

Local transportation is more limited around Eucharistic Miracle of Morrovalle than in a major city. A rental car, pilgrimage coach, taxi, or pre-arranged transfer can be useful, especially if you are staying outside Morrovalle.

Once at the shrine, the main pilgrimage area is often best explored on foot. Check whether the site includes steep approaches, long paths, or seasonal shuttle services.

Good to Know: Confirm your return transportation before beginning a long prayer program or evening devotion.

Where to Stay Stay close to the sacred site or in the most walkable part of Morrovalle.

For a pilgrimage-focused visit, stay as close to Eucharistic Miracle of Morrovalle as practical or in the center of Morrovalle. Proximity is more valuable than luxury when it lets you return for early Mass, evening prayer, or a quiet second visit.

Best For Pilgrims

  • Pilgrim houses or religious guesthouses when available
  • Small hotels or pensions near the shrine
  • Lodging with meal options if the destination is rural
  • Accessible accommodations for elderly or mobility-limited travelers

Pilgrim Tip: Confirm walking distance, hills, and evening transportation before booking.

Accessibility Accessibility is good; historic conditions can still vary.

The main worship and visitor areas at Eucharistic Miracle of Morrovalle are generally manageable for most pilgrims, though historic thresholds, paving, or side chapels may still create barriers. Accessibility services and entrances can change, so verify current arrangements before traveling.

Pilgrim Tip: If mobility is a concern, choose lodging and transportation that minimize unnecessary walking.
