The Story
Caravaca de la Cruz, a hill town in the Murcia region of southeastern Spain, is home to the Real Basílica-Santuario de la Vera Cruz, which crowns the town's medieval castle. The sanctuary guards the celebrated Cross of Caravaca, a double-armed reliquary cross containing wood venerated as a relic of the True Cross, and it is linked by tradition to a Eucharistic prodigy said to have taken place in 1231. According to the traditional account, the priest Ginés Pérez Chirinos was held at Caravaca during the period of Muslim rule. The local ruler, curious about Christian worship, ordered him to celebrate Mass in his presence. As the priest prepared the altar, he realized that no crucifix was present and hesitated to continue. Tradition holds that two angels then appeared bearing a double-armed cross, which they placed on the altar so that the Mass could proceed; the account adds that the ruler was so moved by what he witnessed that he asked for baptism. The cross venerated at Caravaca has long been honored as a Lignum Crucis, a relic of the wood of the Cross. The original relic disappeared in 1934, and in 1942 the Holy See provided two fragments of the True Cross so that the devotion could continue; these are enshrined in the historic double-armed reliquary whose form has made the Cross of Caravaca one of the most recognizable crosses in the Catholic world. The tradition unites the two great mysteries of Catholic worship: the sacrifice of Calvary and its re-presentation in the Mass. For centuries pilgrims have climbed to the sanctuary to venerate the Vera Cruz, and in 1998 the Holy See granted Caravaca de la Cruz a Jubilee Year in perpetuity, celebrated every seven years, a privilege shared by only a handful of places in the world. The town remains one of Spain's principal pilgrimage destinations, with its greatest celebrations surrounding the feast of the Cross each May.
