The Story
The Eucharistic Miracle of Alkmaar is a Dutch Catholic tradition connected with an event reported in 1429 in the Church of St. Lawrence in Alkmaar, in the province of North Holland. It belongs to a remarkable cluster of medieval Eucharistic devotions — Amsterdam, Alkmaar, Bergen and others — that made the Low Countries a landscape of Eucharistic pilgrimage before the Reformation. According to the traditional account, a newly ordained priest, remembered by the name Folkert, was celebrating one of his first Masses when, after the consecration, he accidentally overturned the chalice, spilling the consecrated wine onto the altar linens and his chasuble. The spilled wine is said to have taken on the appearance of blood, and every attempt to wash the stains from the vestment reportedly failed. The bloodstained cloth was preserved with reverence, and the event became the object of local devotion, drawing the faithful to honor Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. The account is documented in the Church-sponsored International Exhibition of Eucharistic Miracles, which records that the reliquary of the stained chasuble has been preserved in Alkmaar's Church of St. Lawrence. Like all such traditions, the Alkmaar miracle is not the foundation of Catholic faith in the Eucharist but a sign pointing toward it: the Church teaches that at every Mass the wine, once consecrated, is truly the Blood of Christ, whatever its outward appearance. The reported miracle invited a doubting age — and invites our own — to renewed reverence at the altar. After the Reformation, public Catholic worship in Alkmaar was suppressed and the city's great medieval church passed to Protestant use, but the memory of the miracle endured among Dutch Catholics. Today it is remembered chiefly through the historical record and the continuing Eucharistic devotion of the local Catholic community.
